At ITI weare always happy to receive correspondence from our graduates, which is why we werepleased to hear from our recent graduate from Tasmania, Volker. Having recentlycompleted the dual accreditation Complete Fire and Smoke Restoration andComplete Odour Control course,Volker writes:
Been back a week now, flatout working. At this point I'm the only one trying out new methods, although I did get everyone to clean walls from the bottom up. And we're using solvents, not sugarsoap!! Excellent I feel confident answering insureds questions regarding restoring and odour control. They were very impressed by the effects of the ozone treatment. At this time we still are working out our priorities ...ie premises, vehicles, machines....we are coming to a head. Thank you for providing this course, I now feel I can talk to loss adjusters on an even plane with confidence. Well worth the money.
All the best,
Volker

It's Always Time for Training
At ITI, we are a dedicated training facility with a large investment intraining infrastructure. Training is our business, and we take it veryseriously. We include hands on training in every module, so you not only learnabout the correct techniques and procedures, you get to practice them as well, under the direct supervision on industry experts. Moreover, we not only don'tmind questions, we encourage them, before, during and after the course. Ourfull training house is a commitment to our dedication towards learning.
Next, you have to consider the long range benefits of training and whatit implies for your business. In any industry, you cannot rest on your laurelsand expect to maintain a competitive edge. Training opens up new avenues forgenerating revenue as well making your current processes more efficient. One ofthe common misconceptions that I deal with on a regular basis is that trainingwill only lead to the purchase of expensive and ultimately useless equipment.Again, nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, of course there areinnovations and advances in the field. Sometimes an expensive machine WILL bethe right choice for you in terms of labour saving or overall costs and we'realways happy to talk to you about your options. But more often than nottraining reveals the massive inefficiencies that most take for granted.
To begin with, the most obvious argument should be considered: time. When business is good and there are heavy profits to be had, it is difficult,if not downright fiscally irresponsible, to take the time required to up skilland train yourself (or your staff). Simply put, if you don't take advantage ofyour slower periods to train, similar opportunities will not presentthemselves.
Case in point: chemical use. Without a proper grounding in basic theoryabout the use of chemicals, many operators and cleaners simply saturate theirjobs with expensive chemicals. There's simply no need! The reality is that youneed a more appropriate chemical (often much cheaper), or that raising thetemperature of the water slightly will double the cleaning efficiency. Onmultiple occasions we have instructed students to half or even quarter theirchemical concentrations to achieve exactly the same results.
This is just one of dozens of little tricks that training can providethat lead to immediate cost savings. The other benefit training can deliver isa massive saving in time... and of course in the cleaning industry like noother, time is money.
Finally, don't be fooled by companies that offer to you train you as afreebie with something else. You get what you pay for. In short, don't let aslower economy slow down your business. As they always say: when the going getstough, the tough get going. Training is an essential part of shoring up thefoundations of your business, and the extra benefits training can bring onlymakes it easier to get ahead in the times ahead.
It may be unusual, then, to consider an economic downturn to be theoptimal time for training. And yet, the reality is that there has never been abetter opportunity.
